More about the Tour....

Sites visited are the Basilica of San Clemente, an 11th century church whose medieval mosaics are unsurpassed in Rome, built on top of an earlier 4th century basilica, over the remains of a domus alleged to be the meeting place of the first Christians in Rome.

Excavations include a mithraeum, a meeting-hall for a pagan mystery religion long considered a rival to the Christian faith. We also visit the majestic Papal Basilica of St. Mary Major to see some of the finest mosaics in the world, admire the most authentic of Roman basilicas in which we still have the original 4th century architectural floor plan, and then on to the minor basilica of Santa Prassede to see the Chapel of St. Zeno and most exquisite 11th century Roman-Byzantine mosaics, along the way learning about the challenges and successes of the early Christian community in Rome.
